As well as an integral part of soil conditioning (the all important top layer), mulching helps to keep moisture in the soil, subdue weeds and provide a source of nutrients as it breaks down and decomposes into the humus layer.

Depending on time of year and abundance of resources, mulch layers can be composed of leaf litter, twigs/branches, wood/bark chip, sawdust, pea straw/hay etc.
