Diary — Saitomo (Japanese Taro)

Saitomo (Japanese Taro)
Oct 09, 2024
Joining the common Taro here in Aotearoa, (Colocasia esculenta - background of picture) is Colocasia var. antiquorum (Saitomo - in my hand). It is stated as smaller taro root, with a more desirable flavour and texture than the common taro. In Japan it is commonly used in stews and soups.

The Taro (Colocasia esculenta) I have planted within my swale terraces and fruit tree guilds have been a massive success. From six initial roots I now have 50+ plants spread throughout the food forest. It will be interesting to see if the smaller variety has similar success.
