Invasive species suppression

Invasive species suppression

Oct 30, 2024

After clearing masses of privet and muehlenbeckia australis, I've been left with a spreading, all conquering alstroemeria that requires various techniques to suppress.

Suppression 1

My preferred method, seen here is using the abundance of deciduous chestnut leaves stuffed in coffee sacks as an organic suppression. Closely followed by a huge glut of tomatoes left to grow wild as another (delicious) layer of organic suppression. Not all alstromerias are invasive, but this one certainly is as it produces large masses of moisture rich tubers that out compete anything in its vicinity.

Autumn update: buckets of tomatoes have been harvested, eaten and preserved and only the smallest pockets of alstromeria have emerged through my suppression layers! A very dry summer has likely helped this process, but considering no chemical agents or back breaking labor have been employed to unearth tubers, I will chalk that up as a win.. so far.
